20251102 Luke 7:36-50 True Love Overflows: Open Your Future Through Faith! (Message Summary)

Introduction (v. 36)
A Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to dine at his house (v. 36). However, his purpose for the invitation was not to truly welcome Jesus.

Point 1: Intentional Disrespect and Overflowing Love (vv. 44-46, 37-38)
The Pharisee Simon showed three acts of disrespect toward Jesus (vv. 44-46). First, he did not give Him water to wash His feet. Second, he did not greet Him with a kiss. Third, he did not pour oil on His head. This was intentionally disrespecting Jesus and humiliating Him in front of others.
At that moment, a sinful woman from that town came with an alabaster jar of perfume and approached Jesus (vv. 37-38). This woman saw Jesus being disrespected and her heart broke, causing her to weep. She wet Jesus' feet with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed His feet, and poured perfume on them. For a woman, her hair represents her pride and dignity, yet she used it as a towel to wipe His feet. And she poured out the precious perfume that was likely her life savings on Jesus' feet. This is not ordinary love—this is overflowing love.

Point 2: The Difference Between 500 and 50 (vv. 39-43, 47)
When the Pharisee Simon saw this scene, he thought to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner" (v. 39). He could not see the woman's love; he only saw a "sinner."
Jesus told Simon a parable (vv. 41-43). If two people owed debts—one 500 denarii (about $50,000) and another 50 denarii (about $5,000)—and both had their debts canceled, which one would love the creditor more? Simon answered, "The one who had the bigger debt canceled."
The Pharisee Simon's problem was thinking he was a "50" and she was a "500." But before God, both 50 and 500 are debts we cannot repay. The problem is not recognizing how much forgiveness we have received. When Jesus said, "But he who has been forgiven little loves little" (v. 47), He didn't mean they were actually forgiven less—He meant they recognized less of their forgiveness.

Point 3: Love Extravagantly!
Those who truly receive grace confess: "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound," "All is grace, grace, the Lord's grace." People who deeply understand the great grace they've received will love extravagantly from that gratitude. True love must overflow.
Jesus first showed us this overflowing love. God gave His own Son to die for sinners like us—this is overflowing love. In 1956, when missionary Jim Elliot was killed by the Auca tribe in Ecuador, his wife Elisabeth went to that same tribe two years later with their three-year-old daughter to share the Gospel. This is overflowing love.
But we calculate too much in our faith. We calculate our time, our offerings, our relationships, and our sacrifices. Jesus gave extravagantly, even His life, yet we still live calculating everything.
The woman in today's passage broke open her precious perfume. This meant she had no tomorrow. But when she lived without a tomorrow, Jesus took responsibility for her tomorrow. In Mark 14, Jesus said of Mary who poured 300 denarii worth of perfume (about $30,000), "She has done a beautiful thing to me" (Mark 14:6, NIV). True love is not about calculation—true love overflows.
Point 4: Not the Past, but the Future (vv. 48-50)

Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven" (v. 48). The Pharisee Simon only saw this woman's past, but Jesus saw her present and blessed her future.
"Your faith has saved you; go in peace" (v. 50) is not just a farewell greeting. It's a blessing saying, "You have a peaceful future ahead of you." This is possible because Jesus is with her.
People of the world say, "I determine my own future." But Jesus says, "Your faith determines your future." Our future is not determined by our abilities but by faith, by walking with Jesus. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV).

Conclusion: Love Changes Everything
The Pharisee Simon disrespected Jesus, thought he was a "50," and only saw the woman's past, so he received no blessing. But one woman loved Jesus extravagantly, recognized she was a "500" debtor, and came to Jesus in faith, so she received a future.
When one woman loved extravagantly, everything in that place changed. Jesus was glorified, and the room was filled with fragrance. When one person does this, such things happen.
You become that one person. In a world that disrespects Jesus, become the one who exalts Him. In a world that calculates, become the one who loves extravagantly. In a world bound by the past, become the one who moves toward the future. Then your home, workplace, and church will be transformed.
When the overflowing love we receive from God is expressed as love for our neighbors, God will pour out even greater grace upon us. During this week ahead, as you offer your life to the Lord, may He see our faith and open up your future. Amen!
