People Whose Names Are Recorded
The original title of Exodus is "Shemot" (שְׁמֹות), which means "names." Interestingly, while the names of powerful Egyptian kings are not recorded in this book, the names of two Hebrew midwives—Shiphrah and Puah—are recorded forever. Is this just a coincidence?
When Jacob's 70 descendants grew into a great nation of 2 million people over 400 years, a new Egyptian king became filled with fear. He oppressed the Israelites with forced labor, but they only multiplied more. Finally, the king gave an extreme command: "Kill all Hebrew baby boys!"
The Choice Between Life and Death
The Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and Puah stood at a crossroads of life and death. If they obeyed the king's command, they could live, but innocent lives would die. If they disobeyed the king's command, they themselves might die.
However, the Bible explains their choice in just one sentence: "The midwives feared God."
They feared God more than the Egyptian king. They revered God more than people, God's will more than worldly power. As a result, they saved the baby boys, and God gave them wisdom.
When the king questioned them, their answer was masterful: "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women—they are vigorous and give birth before we arrive!"
Names That God Remembers
Amazing things happen to those who fear God:
First, God remembers their names. No matter how powerful a king may be, if he doesn't fear God, his name won't be recorded. But the names of these seemingly insignificant midwives are recorded forever.
Second, God gives wisdom. As Scripture says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). True wisdom comes from knowing God.
Third, God blesses them. God made their families prosper. Shiphrah ("beautiful") was blessed to live beautifully, and Puah ("splendid") was blessed to live splendidly.
For Us Living Today
The world still treats life carelessly. People without faith ignore life and disregard human dignity. But those who fear God are different. They know the preciousness of life because "with you is the fountain of life" (Psalm 36:9).
Evil forces don't give up. Like Pharaoh, they try to trouble God's people until the end. But if evil doesn't give up, why should good give up? God doesn't give up on us either. God's plan of salvation is still in progress.
The Moment of Decision
We must choose. Will we fear people or fear God? Will we revere worldly power or revere God?
If we don't fear God, we become afraid of many things—people, money, and the world. But when we have a heart that fears God, the world is not frightening.
I hope we can live with the faith of Job's confession: "But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold" (Job 23:10).
Let's fear God! Then God will remember our names.
