20250914 Deuteronomy 11:1-17 How to Love God: Choose What Pleases God and Live! (Message Summary)
**Introduction**
The way to truly love God must be demonstrated through concrete actions. Just like a businessman who only sought God during crises but forgot God again after the crisis passed, we must truly love God, not use Him. God first loved us and saved us, multiplying Jacob's descendants from merely 70 people to become as numerous as the stars in the sky, so we have sufficient reason to love God.
**First, Love God by Keeping His Word (v.1)**
"Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always." This expression of "loving" God cannot be found in any other religion of the ancient Near East. While it is natural to fear and serve a god, the expression of "loving" God appears only in the Bible. If we love God, we must not do things that God hates. This is the same in marital relationships. Keeping God's Ten Commandments is a concrete way to love God. When we put God first in our priorities, we will not serve other gods, will not use God, will keep the Sabbath, and will love our neighbors.
**Second, Remember God's Great Works (vv.2-7)**
Moses told the Israelites to remember four great works: the ten plagues of Egypt, dividing the Red Sea and destroying the Egyptian army, leading them through the wilderness for 40 years, and causing the earth to swallow up Dathan and Abiram. The incident with Dathan and Abiram is recorded in Numbers 16, where they rebelled against Moses and Aaron's authority along with Korah. God caused the earth to open its mouth and swallow them and their families, showing how serious a sin it is to oppose God's order and authority. When we remember God's grace that He has shown to us in the past, our faith becomes firm and we recover our first love.
**Third, Keeping His Word Gives Us Strength (vv.8-9)**
When we obey God's word, we gain strength and live long in the promised land. This means not simply living a long life, but having a sustained relationship with God and being used by God for a long time.
**Fourth, We Must Choose the Canaan Way of Life (vv.10-12)**
The land of Egypt was a place where farming could be done through human effort using the waters of the Nile River. In contrast, the land of Canaan is a place where one cannot live without God's grace. This speaks not simply of geographical differences but of differences in ways of living. The Egyptian way of life depends on my strength and plans, bank account balance and insurance, while the Canaan way of life depends on God's grace and care. We must trust that God personally cares for our lives from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
**Fifth, When We Obey, He Gives Blessings at the Right Time (vv.13-15)**
The key here is the expression "at the right time." This shows that there is a time we desire and there is a time God gives. Just as farmers cannot control when it rains, for those who love and obey God, God supplies everything at the most appropriate time. He supplies grain, wine, and oil, and even grass for livestock, so that we may eat and be satisfied.
**Sixth, Avoid Idols and Build Up the Body of Jesus (vv.16-17)**
God warns, "Be careful not to be enticed to turn away and worship other gods." If we worship idols, He says we will quickly perish even from the fertile land the Lord has given us. If there is something we love more than God, that becomes an idol. If we love pets more than God, or if hobbies take priority over worship, those become idols. These things themselves are not wrong, but they become problems when they take God's place.
Love for God must begin in the home (Deuteronomy 11:19). "Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Through family mokjang (small groups where families gather to share God's Word), we must share Sunday's message with our children at home, share testimonies of gratitude, and also discuss evangelism to VIPs (unbelievers) at home. Furthermore, we must acknowledge that Jesus is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). "And he is the head of the body, the church." The church is not a place that moves according to people's desires, but a place that does what the Lord is pleased with. Jesus' desire is for soul salvation (Matthew 28:19). "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Paul also said to Timothy, "who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4). The entire church must be interested in soul salvation. When Jesus, the head, moves, the church, which is His body, must also move accordingly. We must put down the idol of "self" and build up the body of Jesus.
**Conclusion**
The way to love God is not to choose what I like, but to choose what God is pleased with and live accordingly. Whatever situation we may be in, we must choose what God is pleased with, and choose the life that Jesus is pleased with both in mokjang and at home. As we walk this way, God will accomplish His amazing plan for us, our families will be blessed, the church will be revived, and amazing works will happen where VIP souls are saved.
