Exodus 16:31-17:7 Summary: "Eat the bread of life that came down from heaven and preserve God's grace for generations!"

The Heavenly Gift Discovered in the Wilderness
Over two million Israelites walked through the wilderness. More people than the entire population of Fukuoka City had to pass through a desert with no food or water for 40 years. Yet amazingly, they did not starve to death. This was because of the mysterious food that came down from heaven—'manna.' "The Israelites called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey" (Exodus 16:31). But it was a mysterious food that could not be accurately described by any earthly food, because it came from heaven.

Daily Bread, Daily Grace
Manna had special rules. Each person could gather only one omer (about 2.2 liters) per day, and if they greedily gathered more and stored it, it would rot. Only on the day before the Sabbath could they gather two days' worth, and mysteriously, it would not rot then. "This is what the Lord commanded: 'Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning'" (Exodus 16:23).
What lesson does this give us? God's grace must be received fresh every day. And when we focus on God through rest, our hearts overflow with gratitude instead of complaints. People who only work always speak of lack, but those who know how to rest give thanks for what God has given them. Without rest, we return to the slave life of Egypt.

Treasure to Be Passed Down Through Generations
God gave a special command: "Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt" (Exodus 16:32). How could manna, with a shelf life of only one day, be preserved for generations? Here lies an amazing secret. Manna gathered for my own greed rots, but manna preserved for the next generation is preserved forever—just like God's Word.
There are people who use Bible verses for their own greed. Such words become rotten words. But words preserved with the heart to pass them to the next generation have the vitality to overcome time.

Jesus, the True Manna and Living Water
Jesus said: "I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever" (John 6:48-51).
The incident when water came out of striking the rock in the wilderness was the same. When God stood on the rock and Moses struck it, living water burst forth like a river. "He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert" (Psalm 105:41). This was an event that foreshadowed how Jesus would give us the river of life through His death on the cross.

Where to Focus Our Eyes
When the Israelites were thirsty, they complained against Moses, not God. "Give us water to drink" (Exodus 17:2). This is exactly our problem. When difficulties arise, we blame people and seek answers from people. But our eyes should be directed toward Jesus, not people.
If complaints and grumbling arise in the church, it's evidence that we're more conscious of people than of God. It's because we lack confidence in the question, "Is the Lord among us or not?" (Exodus 17:7).

The Secret to Overcoming Life's Wilderness
Our life is like a wilderness. But when Jesus is with us, "we will not grow weary even walking through dry land all day long." No matter how much we have, no matter how successful we become, our hearts cannot be filled without Jesus. Only when God is with us can we enjoy true satisfaction and peace.

Legacy to Pass to the Next Generation
The mission given to us today is clear: to pass the true blessing from heaven—Jesus Christ—to the next generation. We must share the grace of God that we have experienced with our children and show them how precious Jesus is. Only then can spiritual nourishment continue through the generations.
Manna fed Israel for 40 years, and Jesus becomes our life eternally. I pray that you will not enjoy this amazing grace alone, but live a blessed life sharing it with the next generation.
